As part of the 2nd Eric Prydz EPIC 2 tour, Immersive asked me to create an 3D Animated video content for the track “Allein”. Once again the deadline was tight but with the help of another animator Tajinder Singh, who helped create and animate the metallic 3d elements from 1.50 mins to 3 mins, everything went well and the show was a big success. The reason for the super wide format was the design of the custom made LED screen, it was a re-work of the first EPIC live show screen design, which was initially projection mapped, both of which were built on a massive scale for maximum impact. A hologram screen was also used in both shows, for which I created custom clips.

The video above was to give an overall view of the animation and format, here I have made a 16-9 crop into the centre portion of the screen In order to give a closer look into the detail of the video.

This was a great project as it gave me a chance to experiment with some new post production techniques and advanced particles effect plugins and here you get to appreciate the hard work a bit closer up.

Drumcode

Drumcode VJ content

This is an edit where I cut together all the VJ content I just made for the DRUMCODE record label into one quick, condensed video. The brief was to create VJ clips based on some of the album artwork of the DRUMCODE recent releases. I had to pick 10 album covers and either re-create the designs as close to the original as possible or use elements from the original artwork files themselves, but either way the idea was to bring the album art to life. From those 10 covers I then had to make as many variations as I could so that the VJs at the DRUMCODE gigs had as much to work with as possible, and in the end I created a total of 54 animations. All of this was done within 17 days back to back. A challenge that was extremely tough especially as the styles of the animations vary so much but I would have to say one of the most enjoyable challenges Ive faced and which I would gladly do all over.

Original Album Artwork

Here are the original 10 Album covers that I based the 10 sets of animation styles on.  Below I have separated image galleries into each of the 10 styles and explain which elements I made from scratch and which animations I used the actual original artwork files.

DC96

This was a combination of 3d elements such as the mouths and worm shapes which I made, and the eyes which were from the original artwork files. All elements were then comped together.

DC100

This was the quickest to make. I warped and distorted the original artwork files into a sort of tunnel shape in post and then animated the blinking eye.

DC103

This was great fun to try get the 2d look in 3d and to put eyes on the end of tentacles, because why not! I just used the original album art as a reference and made it all from scratch using a toon material in 3d. With a bit of warping and editing in post.

DC108

Again I made everything in 3d with a toon material and used the original artwork as a reference.

DC109

I made everything in 3d with a toon material and then altered the renders quite heavily in post to get as close to the original album art as possible. I then played around a bit to get some other looks and variations.

DC125

This set of animations are probably the ones where I combined existing artwork elements and 3d the most. The heart shape and some of the dirt textures, which I added some simple animation to, are from the original art files. The swirls that come out of the heart and the skeletons were made in 3d and comped together with all the other elements. I really enjoyed working on these animations as the style and process was a bit different to the other styles.

DC127

This one was pretty straightforward as I used the original artwork elements of the ear and I just animated some of the pieces of the ear shape to give some secondary motion to the ear object and then obviously animated the square shapes. I played around with offsetting their animation to create some variation.

DC130

Strangely this set of clips are some of my favourites. Mainly the kaleidoscope style clips, because who dosnt like kaleidoscopes. They just gave a real graphic, bold feel that looked great at the first gig where these clips were used. The process involved was very much similar to the DC127 animations, apart from using the kaleidoscope effect, I also spent quite a lot of time separating the individual tentacles / tubes around the edges of the tentacles. I then animated each of the tubes which I feel gives the clips a subtle feeling of movement and life.

DC132

Again this one involved only 2d animation where I isolated each individual element of the original artwork file and added some simple animation combined with secondary movement. For the variations I made mini close up edits and an offset kaleidoscope effect.

DC141

Id have to say that this is one of my favourites too. I made everything in 3d and 2d and used the original artwork as a reference as well as using the original artwork files to create the hand drawn textures which I applied to the 3d objects. Like so many of the animation styles I just tried to have fun with the variations on the original album cover.

Ive been making some video content for the drum and base legend Shy FX live shows for last couple of years ( on and off  ) and this new-ish bunch of VJ clips were so much fun to make because they were a kind of collage style that Shy Fx had asked for and maybe not my usual style but there was so much freedom to play around with some wacky ideas.Really loved making these. The music on this is not Shy Fx btw

I also made the UNITY logo below for his shows.

TIMBERLAND

TIMBERLAND Flyroam Sneaker Launch

This is a short montage of the animation content I created for the new Flyroam sneaker launch event for Timberland. The concept was very simple but huge fun to work on! It was to focus on the textures, surfaces and patterns of the new sneaker. Those being the heel, sole, leather and laces of the shoe. Any animations I made were VJ’d at the event and projected onto the stage and architecture at the secret party near Tower Bridge in London. This was one of my favourite jobs so far to work on!

Worked with Hello Savants from Amsterdam on this TV Commercial for Formula-E in Spain. I only really did some subtle VFX and particles but I had to share this as it was great fun to work on, and I really loved working with the Savants on this. Great team of creatives!

Parklife Festival Promo

Parklife 2018 Festival Promo

This festival promo gives a taste of what one of the new stages at this years Parklife Festival is going to look like. The stage design by Lucid Illusions is AMAZING. It includes 2 tower blocks either side of the stage, with a bridge linking them, and shops with neon signs and frontages with video billboards above. The concept for the stage design was inspired by Blade Runner and similar sci-fi influences of a dystopian future world. My animation was meant to be a really quick turn around but once I started adding details it was tricky to stop. Great fun though !

Vancouver Sleep Clinic music video

Vancouver Sleep Clinic Music Video “Someone To Stay”

I recently worked with Agile Films once again to create some super subtle VFX elements for Vancouver Sleep Clinic’s new music video for a track entitled “Someone To Stay”.

When I say subtle, I mean subtle. The initial shots of the video just required tiny amounts of dust particles floating around the lead signer’s hands which he interacts with. Initially I started with a look that was more detailed and had slight elements of colour, but the directors comments were always “less dust”.

The look she was going for was an understated approach which complimented the style of the video. As the video progresses the dust becomes a ghostly entity which the singer eventually wrestles with. I also worked on some clean up of some unwanted elements in the original footage and in total probably worked on around 30 shots.

These kinds of minimal VFX jobs are always the toughest as they require so much minor attention to detail, but can be the most satisfying as well. I really enjoyed the challenge and the client and band were over the moon with the end result. Check out some stills from the video below, which include some close ups of the hands showing some more detailed look developments from early on in the project.

I recently created this animated promo video for Live Nation on behalf of the energy company Utilita, which was to showcase the Power Tree area of Parklife Festival in Manchester. A place to charge your phones and chill but also to a have a little dance to a DJ playing tunes from his tree house DJ booth !

It was a blast to work on because I had complete creative freedom with everything. Even picking the audio and editing it. The client was receptive to all my ideas and loved the colorful style which reflected the Parklife branding. Love jobs where I can really play with the 3D render layers in post and editing to music. More projects like this please!

Eric Prydz “Generate” Hologram

This is a hologram animation I did for Eric Prydz ” EPIC 3.0 ” Hologram show at Madison Square Garden NYC. This was a landmark, groundbreaking show which used the largest hologram in the world, with all content rendered at 4K. This time the brief was to create something more organic, with DNA and molecules creating quite abstract undulating forms which then evolve to metallic flowing shapes. Together with the hologram I created some track specific back wall VJ content. Once again it was a short 3 week deadline but it turned out well, the show was a success and the client was very happy.
