The Kooples

The Kooples “BLACKOUT”

For this one I was contacted once again by Agile Films to work on their commercial, “BLACKOUT” for The Kooples. It was a quick turn around but all that was required was to track some footage of a hand holding a phone and then replace and composite in an existing screen asset into that footage, as well as stabalising and re-timing the final pull out of the couple at the end of the video and masking out the background to give the effect of a spotlight on the floor around their feet. This took a lot of back and forth to get the re-exact timing as the director had extremely specific instructions of how he wanted the shot to speed up and slow down seamlessly but the end result worked well and was great fun to work on.

Take a look at the shots I worked on in the images below.

The Kooples “BLACKOUT- How To”

Straight after working on the previous “BLACKOUT” video, Agile asked me to work on some further compositing of existing screen assets onto a number of shots in this quirky “How To” video for the same Kooples campaign. I also added subtle projector beams to a bunch of shots and a glicthy effect of the guy in his underwear that is based on the effect in the phone app for which this spot is intended to advertise.

Again a couple of images of some of the shots I worked on are below.

ZEDSEN

ZEDSEN

I teamed up with rehab studio to create this promo animation that introduces the world to zedsen, an exciting new revolutionary scanning technology with a huge number of potential applications. The idea was to give a brief teaser of what zedsen could be capable of but in a minimal, contemporary aesthetic and that fit the already impressive style of the branding.

At the moment the video is password protected while the client gets patent protection, but in the meantime have a look at the images below for a flavor of the style.

02 Instant Winners

02 Instant Winners Day of the Dead

Since the end of last year Ive been making these short loops for the phone network 02, they are to promote the Instant Winners competitions that they run every few months. This one is based on a trip to Mexico to experience the Day of the Dead festival.

Heres the Instant Winners promo animation which is based on Christmas 2019 and related Instant Winners prizes.

Drumcode

Drumcode VJ content

This is an edit where I cut together all the VJ content I just made for the DRUMCODE record label into one quick, condensed video. The brief was to create VJ clips based on some of the album artwork of the DRUMCODE recent releases. I had to pick 10 album covers and either re-create the designs as close to the original as possible or use elements from the original artwork files themselves, but either way the idea was to bring the album art to life. From those 10 covers I then had to make as many variations as I could so that the VJs at the DRUMCODE gigs had as much to work with as possible, and in the end I created a total of 54 animations. All of this was done within 17 days back to back. A challenge that was extremely tough especially as the styles of the animations vary so much but I would have to say one of the most enjoyable challenges Ive faced and which I would gladly do all over.

Original Album Artwork

Here are the original 10 Album covers that I based the 10 sets of animation styles on.  Below I have separated image galleries into each of the 10 styles and explain which elements I made from scratch and which animations I used the actual original artwork files.

DC96

This was a combination of 3d elements such as the mouths and worm shapes which I made, and the eyes which were from the original artwork files. All elements were then comped together.

DC100

This was the quickest to make. I warped and distorted the original artwork files into a sort of tunnel shape in post and then animated the blinking eye.

DC103

This was great fun to try get the 2d look in 3d and to put eyes on the end of tentacles, because why not! I just used the original album art as a reference and made it all from scratch using a toon material in 3d. With a bit of warping and editing in post.

DC108

Again I made everything in 3d with a toon material and used the original artwork as a reference.

DC109

I made everything in 3d with a toon material and then altered the renders quite heavily in post to get as close to the original album art as possible. I then played around a bit to get some other looks and variations.

DC125

This set of animations are probably the ones where I combined existing artwork elements and 3d the most. The heart shape and some of the dirt textures, which I added some simple animation to, are from the original art files. The swirls that come out of the heart and the skeletons were made in 3d and comped together with all the other elements. I really enjoyed working on these animations as the style and process was a bit different to the other styles.

DC127

This one was pretty straightforward as I used the original artwork elements of the ear and I just animated some of the pieces of the ear shape to give some secondary motion to the ear object and then obviously animated the square shapes. I played around with offsetting their animation to create some variation.

DC130

Strangely this set of clips are some of my favourites. Mainly the kaleidoscope style clips, because who dosnt like kaleidoscopes. They just gave a real graphic, bold feel that looked great at the first gig where these clips were used. The process involved was very much similar to the DC127 animations, apart from using the kaleidoscope effect, I also spent quite a lot of time separating the individual tentacles / tubes around the edges of the tentacles. I then animated each of the tubes which I feel gives the clips a subtle feeling of movement and life.

DC132

Again this one involved only 2d animation where I isolated each individual element of the original artwork file and added some simple animation combined with secondary movement. For the variations I made mini close up edits and an offset kaleidoscope effect.

DC141

Id have to say that this is one of my favourites too. I made everything in 3d and 2d and used the original artwork as a reference as well as using the original artwork files to create the hand drawn textures which I applied to the 3d objects. Like so many of the animation styles I just tried to have fun with the variations on the original album cover.

Shy FX Content

SHY FX UNITY

SHY FX Live Show Video Content

Ive been making some video content for the drum and base legend Shy FX live shows for last couple of years ( on and off  ) and this new-ish bunch of VJ clips were so much fun to make because they were a kind of collage style that Shy Fx had asked for and maybe not my usual style but there was so much freedom to play around with some wacky ideas.Really loved making these. The music on this is not Shy Fx btw

I also made the UNITY logo below for his shows.

Defected

Defected Record Label Main Stage Video Content

In summer 2019 I made the main stage video ( VJ ) content for Defected Croatia Festival. Heres a tiny snippet of some of the hundreds of clips I made. The content is also being used for ongoing live shows and Defected gigs

Festival Footage

Here is some footage of the festival in Croatia in 2019. Might have to go next year !

Friction Live Show Visuals

FRICTION

DJ FRICTION Live Show VJ / Video Content

At the start of 2020 I made the VJ content and Intro for the drum n bass legend, Dj Friction. This is the intro I made for his latest bunch of live shows and I have to say I REALLY enjoyed making this. The shows have been a massive success and the client was over the moon with all the animation content I made. The other thing I enjoyed about this job was that the DJ himself had a clear idea and specific brief of what he wanted, so this is why there is an overall feel – in terms of colour and style – which is consistent with his brand.

The 2nd video on the left is a short edit I made form myself just to show some other VJ content I made that wasn’t in the intro video.

Friction Live Show Photos

Here are some photos from the first show at Village Underground.

Audi Sport – TVC

AUDI SPORT – TVC

Worked with Hello Savants from Amsterdam on this TV Commercial for Formula-E in Spain. I only really did some subtle VFX and particles but I had to share this as it was great fun to work on, and I really loved working with the Savants on this. Great team of creatives!

Private Party VJ Clips

Private Party VJ clips

In 2019 I made some VJ clips for a private party and maybe usually I wouldnt share general VJ clips but these were super fun to make and have a play with. I used the awesome X-particles and Octane for these.

Project: Charlotte de Witte Tour Video Content

Client: Res

Creative Director & Producer – Mark Calvert, inc Storyboarding & Concept

Technical Director – Dave Green

Animators – Matt King and Tom Wall

Textures Creatives – Antonio Pagano, Ezequiel Garcia, Christian Smith

At the end of 2019 I made some live tour visuals for the techno superstar Charlotte de Witte.

I worked with the stellar team at RES to create some of the VJ content, closely following the storyboard concept created by Mark Calvert @ RES. We also made branding text animations which were used by DOPs Antonio Pagano & Ezequiel Garcia @ RES on a live studio shoot and projected on all sorts of surfaces and actors to make filmed assets for the show. Overall the combined work from the team was amazing and when it was played on the super massive screen at the gig, the effect was mind blowing!

Heres a video edit from RES with some of our work, unfortunately I cant share just yet. Soon though.

Below are a collection of images of my most of the VJ clips I made for the show, its a mix of animations that were used for the gigs and also some animations I made as RnD and look developments for the shows. I have to say I absolutely loved working on this, it was a chance to try new things and work in a way I might not usually do and this was creatively liberating.
